Even though the sticks are shattered and held down by wraps, they seem to jump off the canvas. This animation signifies the countless ways we are bound to each other in life, love, and art.

The title of this work is a phrase taken from the novel Watership Down. “Going tharn” refers to a rabbit that is stunned on the road by the headlights of a car, and is so transfixed by the light that it cannot move out of harm’s way. There have been many times in both our lives that we felt so overwhelmed or trapped by an event that we were unable to move – an unwilling victim to the circumstance. This composition is split in two – the left side has been filled in with orange to represent an incident that has taken over the mind.

Outgrowths of texture and color fracture the perfectly straight lines of black tape on this piece, representing the wandering paths our lives have taken to get us to where we are now. We honestly never foresaw creating art together – but once we started, there was no going back. The inspiration for this piece was our journey into a side-by-side meditation practice. Once we started sitting together, we found a greater peace and happiness compared to when we meditated alone. The purple wisps of sand are akin to a spirit as it flutters into a deep, relaxed state. The attractive interplay of green and purple reflects our tranquil state of mind during those moments of silence.

The cut pieces of paper on this piece contrast with the white and green sand shapes, representing the collaboration of our two separate minds. We find that our partnership in making art comes very naturally – so much so that we have no desire to ever produce individual works of art. In a very real way, our artwork has become a talisman – one that keeps us coupled in body, mind, and spirit.

This double-piece explores the great pain that accompanies a physical or mental separation. Certain visual elements connect the pieces together, while bridging the gap between the two works. During the creation process, we used a board as a spacer, and then crossed tape and string over it to tie the two works together. When hung properly, the negative space between the pair becomes a part of the overall composition, guiding the eye back and forth – the viewer must acknowledge the physical separation of the pieces, and therefore experiences the division for themselves.
